These filters are great when taking contrasty photos e.g. a landscape shot with large areas of sky. Normally the sky would be over exposed but with a graduated filter you can correct this and end up with a correctly exposed sky without affecting the rest of the photo. Grey graduated filters can also produce stormy looking skies for moody looking shots. Fantastic for vivid landscape photos.
